Many of Michigan’s vineyards are family businesses and farms. In the podcast, Taylor Simpson, one of the vitners at Good Harbor Vineyards in Leelanau Peninsula (Land of Delight) and a self proclaimed “cork dork” discusses why Pinot Grigio grows so well in Michigan which is in the the 45th north parallel – as are some just as some of the great vineyards in Europe.  Taylor also explains that the flavor profile can vary whether the growing season is cold or hot. “In 2009 there was a cold season and 2010 was a hot season which produced a richer and fuller taste.”  In addition to grapes, Taylor and her family grow cherries to produce cherry wine. “It tastes like cherry pie in a glass,” Taylor says.

Matt Moersch, vitner at Round Barn Winery shares the story of how he and his family physically moved a round Amish barn that is six stories tall from rural Indiana to Michigan. For real wine enthusiasts, Round Barn Winery offers a winemaking camp twice a year. Guests can also enjoy a culinary endwise  experience at the winery’s Public House Restaurant.  In the podcast, Matt Moersch shares his passion for sustainable wine growing with a focus on organic and biodynamic approaches.
