As we all know, charity begins at home, and the kitchen is the heart of the home.  It is my honor to use Kitchen Chat’s platform to highlight charities and special causes.  A dear friend of mine, Melissa Palmer, is such an inspiration.  She is battling a rare disease called Pompe.  During our kitchen chat, Melissa shares information about Pompe disease and how we can help those who are fighting against this giant, especially children.

Dr. Priya Kishnani, M.D.  is one of the leading doctors in the world who is helping those diagnosed with Pompe, including Melissa Palmer.  Here is a link to the great research and work that Duke University’s Children’s Hospital is doing. It affects one in 12,000 people, so it’s important to learn about this inherited and often fatal disease.  The treatment includes hours of intravenous medication.  During this time, it’s helpful if the patients (especially children) have iPads or electronic games to distract them during this process.  If you have extra electronics you might wish to donate or if you would like to make a monetary contribution, please contact Duke’s Office of Development.    Thank you!

Savor the day!
